The Making of an Extraordinary Belt

Our made-to-order American Alligator, Ostrich and Java Lizard belts for men and women are considered by connoisseurs to be as beautiful and well-made as you will find anywhere at any price! Our skins are carefully selected at domestic farms, shipped to one of the finer tanneries in France, and then re-imported to our shop, where we hand-produce everything. As far as we know, we are the only maker of rolled-edge belts in the world: rather than gluing the skin, padding and lining together, and then slicing and dyeing the edge, we use a wider piece of skin which we wrap around and under the padding before attaching the lining and stitching it all together. Aside from requiring more skin and a master's touch, this detail imparts added elegance by providing an exceptionally clean, finished edge which, unlike a dyed edge, doesn't fade. It also allows us to "bombe" (or 'dome') the surface, something that cannot be done if the skin is glued.

Details

All of our belts are made with snaps so that you can attach any buckle you choose so long as it is the proper width. Also, our straight belts have a wonderful additional detail: a concealed leather strip attached to the underside of the belt which prevents the loops from sliding off when you are putting the belt on or taking it off. Belts come with a simple brass buckle; we, of course, have sterling silver belt buckles available, if you prefer something truly special. Note that our sterling buckles are all designed to fit a 1" strap or a strap that tapers to 1" at the ends.

You have a choice of a straight belt or a tapered belt (i.e. wider across the back and hips, narrower at the buckle-end and tip), a choice of several different widths, and of several colors for each type of skin; (see below). If you'd like a color or width not shown, let us know and we'll do our best to accomodate you. Please note that all colors, other than black, may vary slightly from what you see on your monitor since each "skin" accepts the dye differently. If you're trying to match something you already own, we will need to have it physically in our hands. And if you purchase one of our buckles or buckle sets at the same time you order a belt, we'll take 10% off the price of the belt.

Sizing Your Belt
To be sure that you order the correct size, measure one of your belts that you wear regularly: lay the belt flat on a table and measure from the tip of the prong (or peg, depending on the style of the buckle) to the hole that you normally put the prong or peg through; (hint: its the hole showing the most wear). This measurement is the combined length of buckle and 'leather'. It will allow us to calculate how long the 'leather' itself should be (depending on the buckle you are buying; i.e.--whether it is the standard brass buckle which comes with the belt, one of our sterling buckles or a buckle you already own). Measure accurately but don't worry about precision. Even waist size varies slightly with time of day, day of week etc.

Please allow us approximately 4 weeks to ship and remember that, since belts are made and sized to order, they are not returnable.
