Live: A4 Bath Road in Bristol reopens after 'police incident' (2026)

A section of the busy A4 Bath Road in Bristol has reopened in both directions after a police incident disrupted traffic earlier today.

Initial reports of the disruption surfaced around 10:50am on Tuesday, March 3. Motorists were advised to anticipate significant delays and to consider alternate routes where possible.

Travel West England posted on X (formerly Twitter) saying: “Bath Rd A4 is closed in both directions between Church Hill and West Town Lane due to a Police incident. If possible, use an alternative route and expect long delays.”

At 11:10am, the same account updated: “Bath Rd A4 between Church Hill and West Town Lane has reopened in both directions, but the outbound right-turn lane to West Town Lane is partially blocked due to the ongoing Police incident. Expect delays.”

Traffic data provider Inrix initially logged a crash but later updated its status to include a police incident as well. It now reports that restrictions have been lifted and traffic is easing.

Timeline highlights:
- 12:49pm — Inrix notes traffic is easing following the earlier police incident on the A4 Bath Road outbound from Church Hill to the A4174 Callington Road. Restrictions have been lifted.
- 12:05pm — The road reopens in both directions, though the outbound right-turn lane to West Town Lane remains partially blocked. One lane is still affected and traffic is slow as the situation stabilizes.
- 11:20am — Warnings about long delays circulated as Bath Road (A4) was closed in both directions between Church Hill and West Town Lane due to the police incident. Drivers were urged to use alternate routes and brace for delays.

Bottom line: the stretch is now operating in both directions with lingering lane restrictions, and traffic is gradually returning to normal as authorities wrap up the incident."
